Reflection
Some of the expectations that I had for Bio this year that we were going to be going a lot of hands on things. At the beginning we did some of the alstroemeria observations, and that was something that I was really excited about. I really like looking at things on the microscope and so I was really excited about it. I was also really excited about the dissection.
A moment that changed my perspective about being a scientist was when we were doing our abstraction paintings, because I always thought that to be a scientist you had to be doing science. I didn’t really realize that just looking and observing the small details of something could make you a scientist. I have evolved as a scientist this semester by learning to take better notes, I learned how to do better research about scientific topics. Before I thought that if was really hard to do research and now I find it more fun, because I get to learn about diseases that I didn't know about.
For the Power Within my biological power came from my heart. I studied the circulatory system because the heart was apart of it, it was important to me because when my brother left it was really stressful for me and my family. The stress from it can affect your heart and it could lead to heart diseases. Taking care of my heart for me has been easy so far, I tend to eat healthy, I tend to do a lot of exercise and I don’t drink. My grandpa used to smoke and then he had heart problems. During the painting process, we started out with doing drafts on paper first, then we got critique and then we had to get approved. When I first started out I had an idea so have a skull and a heart where the brain goes but as I got critique I started not to like it and over night I decided to change it. I came to school the next day and had a completely different idea. I ended up drawing the heart inside of the rib cage and getting that drawing approved. When I got approved I started out with doing my backgroud color, then tracing my drawing onto the canvas, then blocking out the color and then doing all of the details of everything.
While doing the painting process I learned about how much detail goes into everything that scientist do. I had to pay a lot of attention to all of the small things that I didn’t think people would notice. Some of the challenges that I faced while painting was having to put in a lot of time into my painting. Sometimes I also had to deal with not having enough of one color and having to mix it again so that it was the same. I also didn’t get to finish my painting on time but I got it finished before the day of my exhibition.
I’m really proud of the finished product because of all of the effort that went into it. I know that next time I have to keep calm and not get frustrated during the process. I have to be able to keep up my effort all the way throughout my process.
