Some of the things that I want people to know about nutrition is, it’s never too late to turn it around and make better choices, and that not everything that you thought was healthy for you actually is. During this project my mom has been trying for our family to eat healthier, we didn’t eat unhealthy before, we just didn’t always pick the right things. My mom has been getting us to not eat foods that have preservatives and I think that this has impacted my decisions too. Everyday my mom will make us a green juice, it contains things like kale, spinach, apples, celery, ginger, and pineapple, and I know that this has helped me make better choices because I don’t feel cravings for “junk food” anymore. I think that this is a change that everyone is capable to of doing, and should do it.

Some of the things that I learned this year is that during your teenage years it’s the most important that you try to be as healthy as possible, and to keep your brain protected. When we first started this project I knew that the brain was obviously the most important organ in your body but I didn’t realize why. Some of the things that I learned from my nutrition group is that in your teenage years you can make the decision to have better mental health in the future. One of the things that was talked about in my book. The Grain Brain, by David Perlmutter, is that he has many patients that he helps with their nutrition, and once they made the change to healthier food they saw changes in their mental health. All of these patients were much older, but the author says that he couldn’t give them back all of those year of bad nutrition back but that the rest of their lives would be different. With this project it helps me start making healthier choices from right now so that when I’m older I don’t have to worry about my mental health. “The report reveals that the risk of stroke in those consuming one or more artificially sweetened sodas a day was almost tripled, with a similar finding for Alzheimer’s risk. These are breathtaking findings because clearly, when it comes to stroke as well as Alzheimer’s disease, modern medicine has precious little to offer patients. The reason these findings should not come as a surprise is because both stroke and Alzheimer’s disease share a similar mechanism in terms of their cause. Both of these issues are primarily inflammatory disorders. As I have discussed earlier, research indicates that the changes induced in the gut bacteria in humans when they are exposed to artificial sweeteners creates a much more inflammatory environment. This explains, for example, why there’s a dramatically increased risk for both obesity as well as diabetes (both are inflammatory disorders) in relation to consumption of these artificial sweeteners. And both of these diseases are powerfully related to both stroke and Alzheimer’s in and of themselves.”
